About Us

FGSU aims to support and reaffirm students by offering a diverse range of events, professional opportunities, and a place to make friends!

Being First Gen at American University
Being First Gen at AU, we realize that holding the identity of a first-generation student is complex. First-generation students are academically skilled and contribute greatly to the campus community; it is the lack of critical cultural capital necessary to navigate the “hidden curriculum” of universities and colleges successfully that impacts first-generation students adversely.
Students with one (or more) parent(s) or guardian(s) that have completed a 4-year institution often have greater sources of support in understanding how to traverse the policies, procedures, jargon, and expectations of collegiate life.
Roughly 1 in 12 undergraduates at AU are first-generation college students, including 11 percent of the Class of 2027, according to data from the Office of Enrollment. Since 2020, AU has seen an increase in the number of applicants and admits from first-generation backgrounds; preliminary data for fall 2023 also indicates there are 80 more first-generation students on campus this year than in 2022.
