First-Gen Experience & Obstacles
Being a first-generation student has made me proud of where I come from, where I currently am, and where I am going. It has shaped my career because it has motivated me to keep following my dreams and serve as a role model to my younger brothers and other students (specifically Latino men). As a product of immigrants from Mexico, English was my second language, so not only was I navigating the entire education system for the first time but also helping my parents learn it at the same time. My parents have always supported me even though they only speak Spanish and will always be rooting for me.
Involvement Outside of School
I am co-captain of a team in Stonewall Bocce DC (Spring 2024 Tournament Champions).
Tips/Motivation/Messages for First-Gen Students
You matter and are meant to be at this university. Focus on your own journey and not on your peers – be your biggest cheerleader! Find your support system and rely on them not only when it’s going well, but when it’s also going hard. Just know that all the work you are doing now will be worth it later on.
Anecdote
I found my passion in higher education and it’s one of the best feelings to go to work and know that I make a difference every day. Find your passion and follow it!
