AU First Generation Student Union
Ana Maria Ulloa-Shields
Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Academic Services in the School of Communication
Where did you go to school? Major?
I attended New York University. I was a double major in international business and management.
What involvement do you have with students at AU?
I support the students in the School of Communication throughout their undergraduate journey. I can help open up conversations with faculty, get connected to a student organization or just discuss the challenges a student is facing while in college.
First-Gen Experience & Obstacles
I am the daughter of Cuban immigrants, so not only am I a first generation college student, I am also a first generation American. My parents supported me in going to college, but could not help me with any of the details. I was lucky enough to get connected with the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars Program at NYU. It was through this program that I met other students of color who were also first generation college students. The upper class students supported me and were my mentors and guides. The other students in my year were my good friends and helped keep me grounded.
Involvement Outside of School
Outside of school, I am the mother to a funny, kind and active two-year old. I am also pursuing my Doctorate in Education at Vanderbilt University.
Tips/Motivation/Messages for First-Gen Students
There is a community of faculty, staff and students at AU that are first generation college students. The community is large, so if you ever want to connect with someone who is first gen, email me or ask your advisor who is first gen in the office. In my office, more than half of us are first generation college students.
