Where did you go to school? Major?

Florida State University in Social Sciences/Political Science

What involvement do you have with students at AU?

I oversee the strategic direction of six key administrative units: the Mary Graydon Student Center, the Center for Leadership & Community Engagement, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, the Kay Spiritual Life Center, the Center for Student Involvement, and New Student and Family Programs, all areas that are at the intersection of student life and development.

First-Gen Experience & Obstacles

Being the proud son of immigrants and the first in my family to attend college has profoundly shaped my career and my approach to life. The journey has instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility—not just to myself, but to the sacrifices and dreams of my parents, who worked tirelessly to give me opportunities they never had. This sense of duty has fueled my drive to succeed and uplift those around me. Being first has also underscored the power of relationships and the necessity of mentorship. I quickly learned that forging genuine connections and seeking guidance from those who have navigated similar paths are essential to overcoming the unknowns of being a first-generation student. Balance has been another critical lesson; balancing ambition with self-care, and work with family, has helped me maintain resilience. The path has not been without obstacles. I have faced moments of doubt and the fear of not belonging in spaces that were unfamiliar to me. Yet, these challenges taught me the transformative power of failure—not as an endpoint but as a stepping stone toward growth. Each setback has fueled my determination, making me not only more persistent but also more empathetic. I am who I am today because of the sacrifices of my parents, the unwavering love of my family and friends, and the support of a community that believed in me when I needed it most. The journey has shaped me into a leader who values perseverance, connection, and the profound potential within every challenge.

Involvement Outside of School

I wouldn’t say interesting, but I am a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, and I enjoy hiking, boxing, trying new recipes and restaurants, and extensive travel.

Tips/Motivation/Messages for First-Gen Students

Seek Out Mentorship and Build a Support Network: Don’t hesitate to reach out for guidance from mentors, professors, or peers who can help you navigate the college experience. Having a support network of people who understand your journey can provide invaluable advice, encouragement, and resources when you need them most. Embrace Your Unique Journey: Remember that your path may look different from others, and that’s okay. Your background and experiences bring a unique perspective to your education. Embrace your identity, and don’t be afraid to share your story—it can inspire others and remind you of your strength. Prioritize Self-Care and Balance: College can be demanding, especially when balancing academics with other responsibilities. Make sure to take time for yourself to rest, recharge, and maintain your mental and physical well-being. Balance is essential for long-term success and helps prevent burnout.
