Dr. Sherri Williams

Assistant Professor in Race, Media and Communication

Where did you go to school? Major?

I started my undergrad program in 1991 at Philander Smith College and later transferred to Jackson State University in 1993. I majored in English w/a concentration in journalism (I chose to attend two HBCUs)

What involvement do you have with students at AU?

I am a Professor.

First-Gen Experience & Obstacles

My college career was difficult because there were multiple financial challenges. However, I watched my mother strategize her way out of tight money scenarios, so I did the same while in school. But having that experience prompted me to propose the School of Communication's Student Emergency Fund to hopefully make things a little easier for this era of first-generation students in the SOC at AU.

Involvement Outside of School

I recently finished my book Black Social Television: How Black Twitter Changed Television and I'm going to visit libraries across the country to discuss Black representation and digital activism for authentic images.

Tips/Motivation/Messages for First-Gen Students

You bring knowledge that others don't have and it is as valuable as you are. Own it and act like it.
