First-Gen Experience & Obstacles
The obstacles I’ve faced was trying to find the “perfect career,” so I bounced around with various companies and explored multiple fields. Even when my family questioned each career change, it’s because I’m a first-generation college graduate that I’ve had the confidence to explore the unknown and remain focused, even when things seem impossible to accomplish.
Involvement Outside of School
I am part of the sandwich generation, taking care of parents and guiding my young adult sons (all within my home), so I do my best to carve out time to enjoy traveling and volunteering.
Tips/Motivation/Messages for First-Gen Students
Build your village, whether it’s friends, mentors, professors or the residential advisor. These are the people you can reach out to about various resources or have them push you across the finish line when feeling overwhelmed.
Anecdote
Although it may seem like you should avoid them, challenges help you grow. Even if you feel like “I’ve gone one step ahead but fell three steps backward”, celebrate each experience because it is proof that you tried.
