First-Gen Experience & Obstacles

Being a first-generation student has shaped my career for the better. Along the way, I had staff and faculty members that would help guide me. One obstacle was trying to break into the field of academic advising. As a first-generation, I did not know what to expect from the interview process. Another obstacle I have faced during my time here is knowing the jargon and hierarchy of higher ed. I am lucky to have such a supportive office and supervisor who is also first-generation.

Tips/Motivation/Messages for First-Gen Students

Please do not be afraid to ask staff and faculty members for help! We are here to support you. I was lucky enough to have someone at UMBC checking in on me. As a first generation myself, I understand how hard it is to sometimes speak up. Please do not let imposter syndrome get to you. You are worthy and deserve to be here! I am also happy to speak with any first-generation students.
