Khouri A. Lassiter

Assistant Director of LGBTQIA+ Education and Support Programs

Where did you go to school? Major?

Towson University; Family and Human Services and Adult Disability Studies

What involvement do you have with students at AU?

I work directly with our LGBTQIA+ student population, some things that I do are gender-based housing considerations, educational and fun programming, and overall support!

First-Gen Experience & Obstacles

Being first-generation shaped my career a lot. In undergrad, I had the pleasure of working is our Center for Student Diversity (similar to our CDI), and it provided me with the tools that I needed to be in the current role that I am in today. I often will say CSD is the reason that I am in this work today, but it helped me find my passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Without CSD and my salient first-generation and queer identity, I wouldn't know what field of work I would be in today. The major obstacle that I have faced, I would argue, is more internal than external, which is imposter syndrome. There was a constant state of feeling like I was not smart or capable enough to do jobs at the beginning of my career, but I realized that not only do I have a wealth of experience and knowledge, but I would not be in these positions if folks did not entrust me to shepherd them.
