AU First Generation Student Union
Kim Araya
Director, University Conference and Guest Services
Where did you go to school? Major?
Loyola University New Orleans in Political Science
What involvement do you have with students at AU?
I hire over 100 students throughout the year to assist us with over 250 clients who come to AU throughout the year.
First-Gen Experience & Obstacles
Back in the early 1980s, when I was in college, there was no such identification at "First Gen." I am so happy this is something colleges are recognizing, so that we can come together to assist one another on this journey throughout your college career.
Involvement Outside of School
ACCED-I---Association of Collegiate Conference Event Directors International. I served as the President from 2020-2023 and have had various roles within this organization since 2004.
Tips/Motivation/Messages for First-Gen Students
Be true to yourself---find your PASSION and go for it! Life is too short to be doing something you don't love. Along the way, mentor other First Gen college students--they will appreciate your help and wisdom.
Anecdote
Be appreciative of the help along the way... If it wasn't for Loyola University, I would not have my Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science or my Master's of Science in Behavioral Counseling from Johns Hopkins. Nor would I have been able to achieve what I have in my professional life these past almost 40 years without the help from Loyola.
