What involvement do you have with students at AU?
In my role as Assistant Director, I work with fraternities and sororities every day as an advisor and support system. Most of my time is spent advising chapter leadership and Council Executive Boards on their day-to-day functions and problem-solving. Through my office, I also get to host and support all kinds of events ranging from Winter Welcome to Recruitment.
First-Gen Experience & Obstacles
Being first gen has hugely shaped my career. My purpose for coming into student affairs has always been to support students who, like me, are first-gen and/or maybe more introverted to find their place on campus. My experience navigating college on my own helped me understand the challenges and has provided me with many tools to share with others.
Involvement Outside of School
Outside of school, I spend a lot of time doing community building in relation to my hobbies! I have been able to combine my love for trading card games (TCGs) and anime with my passion for bringing people together. Now I am working on making my community the biggest and most active in the DMV!
Tips/Motivation/Messages for First-Gen Students
To the first-generation students: Always focus on moving forward. There will be roadblocks, there will be bad days – you have what it takes to persevere. You are not alone. There are so many people on and off campus who share similar experiences and are dedicated to your success – lean on them as much as you can!
